What is TCI?

In our continuing efforts to advance the cause of each youth served and to further reduce the incidence of Law Enforcement Interventions, restraints, and potential injuries to youth and caregivers, Adriel researched multiple crisis intervention approaches which could be applied to both a highly structured residential group home environment as well as less restrictive (foster) home settings and schools. Therapeutic Crisis Intervention is now the crisis intervention curriculum of choice, and is regularly offered by Adriel’s Training Institute in concert with a broad scope of monthly training.

Logan County Juvenile Court Probation Department personnel have already participated in this exciting opportunity. “I felt the training empowered our staff to help youth make informed choices before they act. Our probation officers and group home staff find that the ‘Life Space Interview’ and De-escalation techniques help to quickly restore order. We now have more tools to help the school systems and parents support Logan County youth,” commented Ms. Luanna M. Miller, Chief Probation Officer for Logan County Juvenile Court.

“This is a cost-effective way to enhance the confidence and effectiveness of workers in the field, reducing potentially serious incidents and liability risks."

Therapeutic Crisis Intervention was first developed through the Residential Child Care Project of the Family Life Development Center of Cornell University and implemented in New York State in 1979. The curriculum was developed after a great deal of research and practical experience relating to injuries and abuse which occurred while children were placed in out-of home care. TCI has now been implemented in residential, foster are, and educational settings throughout the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
