Bridges Program for Young Adults Aging Out of Foster Care

Bridges is a voluntary program available to young adults who are aging out of foster care but still need support. It is open to former foster youth ages 18-20 (not yet 21) who left (or are leaving) the Ohio foster care system, and who are in school, working, participating in an employment program, or have a medical condition that prevents them from going to school or working.

Administered by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services through a contract with the Child and Family Health Collaborative of Ohio, LLC, the Bridges program provides guidance and support to those aging out of foster care as they transition to adulthood. It includes essential services in the areas of housing, education, employment, and well-being.

Supportive Services Provided

Housing

Bridges representatives can help those aging out of foster care find affordable, safe housing. In some cases, the program can help with funding resources and provide tips for managing and maintaining housing for those newly living on their own.

Education

The program also helps with education resources. This can include navigating access to GED testing, vocational school, an apprenticeship program, community college or a four-year college. Bridges representatives can even help explore financial aid, scholarships, and the Education and Training Voucher (ETV) program.

Employment

The Bridges program helps those aging out of foster care with various resources related to job search, skills assessments, and training. This program also can help with access to appropriate attire for interviews and workplaces.

Well Being

Times of transition can be very challenging, and your physical and mental health should remain a tip priority. The Bridges program for those aging out of foster care can help young adults gain access to health insurance, doctors, or other needed health-related assistance.
